Some News About Copyrights

topic posted Sat, April 19, 2008 - 7:16 PM by  April
Okay, I now how most us who are fans of the BDSS can't stand it when they post the performance DVD's on YouTube; i.e. illegal activity. So we all have to ban together and get it kicked off. However, there may be some hope in the future. I was just watching G4 TV a minute ago and YouTube peeps announced a "claim your title" or something like that. This would keep people from uploading anything with a copyright to the site. Wow! Maybe now we won't have to worry about the DVD's getting placed on YouTube and people violating contracts. We can only hope.

~ Just thought it would be something interesting to note to everyone since we all normally work to get that stuff off the YouTube site. ~

P.S. If I'm wrong or something and someone else knows more about this stuff than I do, please feel free to correct me! :-)

Youtube will only kick it off it you report it yourself. They can't and don't check every single video on the website. Youtube itself is not responsible for uploaded copyright infringement material. The only way that you can prevent this 100% is if you persecute the ones who are uploading it in the first place.

Not bd related, but what about things like music or music videos? Viacom and other major record labels are suing youtube and myspace for copyright infringement, but is this helping the band or is it hurting the bands? Some bands by their own volition put their music on youtube for promotion purposes. So, on this note, could you say that its also promoting the dancers? Maybe I'm wrong, but I see Youtube as a promotion vehicle.

i do too, as long as they don't mess with it like some of the non-belly dancing idiots have done with Rachel's vids etc... made them sleazy etc with their tag lines.
i've bought DVDs and CDs based on music/videos clips i've found on YouTube. bands i'd never heard of prior to that. and then i post them on my facecraque in the ilike section, so anyone browsing my profile there would also be introduced to them.

we could extend this, what do you dance to? your own music? should we all, as dancers, be paying bands for the use of their music to belly dance to? it opens up a whole bag of snakes. but again, by us using their music, especially obscure bands, it promotes their music.

it certainly does open a whole bag of snakes on where the line should be drawn.

Well my main point here is when people take the videos and make them into something else like the Rachel incident and others where bellydance is taken from someone's YouTube page and then turned into a seething pile of 'Sexy Girl Dancing'. I'm hoping that maybe it might obscure people from doing such things if it’s illegal. I use YouTube as promotion too, but you also have people who post videos of the dancers when they tell them not to.

Oh hey, don't get me wrong, I totally agree with your principle points on it, and said so in my post regarding the sleazy use of some of the vids. Those are the ones we, as a group, can watch for and point out to the YouTube admins.
I would just hate to see it all come to a crashing halt, as I like taking my YouTube moments while working at the computer. I don't have the time to be pulling out my piles of DVDs and loading them up on the puter etc... at least not while i'm working.
Well, these sleazebags can also take your pics and post them wherever they want on the internet, and the chances of you finding them are slim to none. It's creepy, but what can you do, unless you find it, nothing.

And as a user-generated site, that's a lot easier said than done.

i totally agree with the comments about the sleazy vids or vids that are up there when the dancer asked specifically that they not be.

but i definitely think that the good vids on youtube and other internet sites are total promo for the dancers/ artists / bands / ...
who knows how many bands we discovered through music on internet?
if it weren't for youtube i'd never have found the BDSS...
and although half the dvd is up on internet, i still went out and bought it, as i do with the cds of bands i find through copied music, when i like them, so i don't think internet is hurting the artists half as much as the press say it is...
