Introductions at the end of the show

I must say to Miles that although it's not a matter of enormous importance, I miss the part of the show at the end in which Jillina used to introduce the dancers, as the the performance seems to 'fizzle out' in a less conclusive way without it. It also draws attention to anyone that's new, and allows the audience to show appreciation for everyone as individuals.

I've seen a few people expressing the same view - and no one disagreeing - so I'm inclined to think that bringing back the introductions would prove popular.

Gotta say, I'm not a fan of the introductions at the end. I never saw it live, only on the DVD, and the whole thing seemed very high school play to me. We've already got the program, so there's really no need for it. And, once the show ends, I want to start talking about it, not sitting through 5 more minutes. I think the end does kinda sneek up on you if you're watching it live w/o close attention to your program but, since it's more of a variety show than a story, that's just inevitable.

Oh, and there was a discussion a ways back about why the meet 'n greets disappeared. Basically, it was a combination of theater policies (wanting to have the show cleared out in time for the next performance) and security (some people were getting a little too into the dancers).

Fair enough, that's one vote for no introductions, but I would say that it can be difficult working out who is who from the program, particularly if it's your first show and you are not near the front. Not all the photos in the program are clear portraits, and as it will have all the dancers appearing at any point during the tour you see, there will probably be a few that are not in the show you attend.

Regarding meet and greets, I think those explanations for them ending may have applied in some situations, but definitely not all. BDSS shows don't tend to end as late as many concerts, and I can't imagine that security has been considered an issue in the UK - I've attended 6 meet and greets after UK shows and the fans participating have always been very respectful and (apart from myself) nearly all female. Although it's entirely a matter for Miles and the dancers to decide, it would be nice to think that under certain circumstances, at least some dancers might appear for a quick meet and greet now and again. I must add that I think meet and greets were great PR and a significant factor in causing people to become enthusiastic fans; that certainly applied to me!

As much as I enjoyed them, I understand about the meet & greets. But I'm for the intros at the end. I went to a show last fall and for me it wasn't so bad because I knew who most everyone was, but I had to guess who the new dancers were. However, for the entire ride home, my boyfriend kept asking questions like, 'who was that one?', 'who was in such and such piece?' and 'where was so-and-so from because she looked familiar?'. Even in opera or on Broadway the cast gets a curtain call. What's wrong with giving the company a final bow?

I totally agree with this - the meet and greets i would love to get back but if dancers' safety is at risk then they shouldnt do them. But the introductions are my favourite part, not only cuz you get to give your favourite dancer some attention, but because they get to show off their own styles a bit more than in the choreographies. That's how i see it anyway! I love this part and i really hope it comes back, especially as new members keep popping up all the time and you don't always know who is who - plus, as Friga said, the other half doesnt keep asking who so-and-so was and i cant give him an answer!

One of the issues we face in the mainstream venues is a tight time schedule where if we are in the venue even one minute over the time alloted the union charges the promoter (who then charges us) overtime and it is usually very expensive. So we work to a very tight schedule even after the show is over so we dont incurr the extra charges. The dancers all loved the meet and greats and would like them back but its not possible in most venues. The stalker issue also is a concern as well. As for introductions again its a time issue and it would mean dropping one of the dance numbers to have the time to do it. Many of the venue operators and our booking agent also opposed the introductions as they felt this was too "amature hour". We have the program and that will have to do for the moment. We also do have a projection showing the dancers faces and names that starts immediately after the show and many stay and watch that. We are revamping this to make it better for the next tour so that may work out well as it puts the name to the face on screen.

That being the case, I would definitely rather see the ladies dancing a lovely number rather than taking their bows. The show flies by so fast as it is! I am never ready for the curtain to fall!

Please come back to the Des Moines area soon!!! Or **maybe** you could hit OMAHA this time around! ;)

Wow, you have cut the in-show name announcements now?

I was not given a program at the BDSS show I attended. So if there are no name announcements, and no programs, how are we supposed to know which dancer is which when they are on stage?

Not providing a program to go with your formal show is what's "amateur hour".

I kinda have to agree with da Sage. All the broadway shows that I've seen as they were touring had a program that they gave to everyone that entered to see the show. They also have a lovely, more extensive program for sale.

There has never been a basic free programme at any of the European shows I've been to. I'm all for it because although the glossy ones on sale are good, they tend to include more dancers that you see at any particular performance, so they don't tell you exactly who you are seeing. The same often applies to the sequence of dances listed, which may well have been revised since the programme was printed.

Yes that's true Adrian! In the 2006 tour for example, i saw them in Birmingham, but I know Rachel joined the show shortly after that - she wouldn't have been in the programme on those dates. Plus, at Raqs Britannia 07, they had the very same programme as the 06 tour - some of the dancers weren't in that! But then, they did do the introductions at 07...

The one thing I did like about the introductions at the end (that sounds odd...) is that each dancer had a chance to perform a short solo. I wouldn't mind a final piece that incorporated a brief solo for each dancer, thus cueing us that the show is ending and allowing each dancer to shine, without cutting out a dancing piece. (I'm sure you must get tired of all our ameteur input).
