Belly Dance Community Events....

I want to thank Miles for giving back to the belly dance community by hosting Raqs L.A, Raqs America (both of which was their first year), and Raqs Britannia this year. I believe this is Raqs B third year and it's going great. I really enjoy myself there and i've heard a rumor that there may be a Raqs Italia Next year??? I feel a European Belly-dance Road Trip coming on....

no but seriously, i think it's beautiful that Miles cares enough about the bellydance community to stay involved by hosting these events and as a dancer working for Miles, it's great to be surrounded by all of my inspirations, to see all the new upcoming stars i have missed, and to see those i have respected for years by hardly get a chance to see.

At Raqs LA i got to see Mesmera perform with whom i had taken workshops with in the past but haven't had the chance to see her in a few years and she was as beautiful as i've always remembered her. I got to see Fahtiem perform in person for the first time and she is such a Show-Stopper!!! As well as Morocco; whom i had never seen in person either and THAT LADY CAN PLAY ZILLS!!! In Raqs Britannia I got to see Suhaila and isabella perform TOGETHER and that was monumental! It brought my mother to tears!

Always great to see the woman i work with and respect so much: Jillina, Sonia, Bozenka, Ansuya, Moria, Kami, Zoe, Colleen, Lauren, Nathalie, Jayna! Can't wait until next year and everyone who couldn't make it this year - YOU'VE GOTTA COME NEXT YEAR!!! Thanks Miles!!!

I notice that almost everything in the BDSS is either Egyptian, Tribal, or fusion. How about including some turkish dancing in the program? Not really the skirt fusion that americans invented but the real dancing. I know I would love to see some do an old school chiftitelli with floorwork or some fun Turkish rom.

hello everybody!!

i was wonderin whether anyone has purchased bozenka s dvd already?
i came across it today - together with jamilla s new one, i discovered them on the bdss website..
however, there is nothing on amazon nor youtube regarding the dvds.
trailers have pretty much become a standard for new instructionals I feel.. anybody found one so far?

first hand experience with either of the dvds would also be greatly appreciated.. thanks!!

BDSS in Europe?

I have heard, from 2 different sources; the first stated that the BDSS would be in Belgium at the end of this year, and more recently, one saying the BDSS would be in Paris in November.

no info about this on the BDSS website, nor anywhere else that's official..

does anyone have any info on a possible European tour?

Raqs America question

Ok heres my problem: I booked (not yet payed) 3 workshops on 2008-06-17 04:37:23. I did not pay for them right away because I had a question about the Day passes-- I was having trouble booking them. So I called the phone number listed on the workshops page but got no answer, so I sent an email. Today i checked my email and have gotten no answer plus I checked the raqs america website and it says that i can no longer pay for my order; i have to wait till the event takes place. Question is: did I lose my spots/booking/workshop prices?HOw can I finally pay for them?

Was soo much fun!!
Sharon was missed very much, that was the only low for me personally...
Natacha Atlas was incredible of course, what a stroke of genius getting her in on Saturday night. The crew were amazing, everything was very well organised, very helpful, they are are hardcore crew, so thanks to all of them for making our lives easy over the weekend.

The workshops were so much fun to teach and it was great catching up with old friends and faces from the previous year.
I managed to take as many workshops as I taught which was great, so I have more training material now that I'm home.
AND it didnt rain!!!!
Raq on.

Any one else got views/opinions/highs/lows to share?

Raqs America cancellations? Help?

I signed up and paid for a Moria workshop at Raqs America, only to find out that she's not actually going to be there. I've sent an email and called the number listed on the Raqs America website to inquire about a refund, and haven't heard from anyone.

I also bought a ticket to the 9:00 show, which has since been cancelled, and need to switch my ticket to the 7 PM show.

Will Sharon's classes also be cancelled after her accident? I bought two of her workshops.

What's the best way to go about getting this straightened out?

I was really proud to see it sitting on the table at Raqs LA but i am always looking for feedback as there we can all constantly improve.... so any comments, suggestions likes or dis-likes? it will also be available at Raqs Britannia, and Raqs America as well as at the BDS booths and soon to be in Target (in July) alongside the other BDS dvd's! I want to express how glad I was to see such a turn out for Tribal auditioners during Tribal Fest weekend. I know it's tough to choose between all the fun things going on. You were all so beautiful and I'm glad to have seen the talent that's out and about these days on the West coast. Thank you for coming and putting yourself forward. It's always such a vulnerable place to be and you all handled it with grace and stability, even when your music was cut unexpectedly short :) Good luck with everything and I hope to see you all again very soon.

Some News About Copyrights

Okay, I now how most us who are fans of the BDSS can't stand it when they post the performance DVD's on YouTube; i.e. illegal activity. So we all have to ban together and get it kicked off. However, there may be some hope in the future. I was just watching G4 TV a minute ago and YouTube peeps announced a "claim your title" or something like that. This would keep people from uploading anything with a copyright to the site. Wow! Maybe now we won't have to worry about the DVD's getting placed on YouTube and people violating contracts. We can only hope.

~ Just thought it would be something interesting to note to everyone since we all normally work to get that stuff off the YouTube site. ~

P.S. If I'm wrong or something and someone else knows more about this stuff than I do, please feel free to correct me! :-)

please, please, please we are begging you to consider doing an african tour since we miss out so much on all the goings on with the BDSS and most dancers in South Africa would love to see them live! (Even if you miss out the rest of the continent and just come to SOUTH AFRICA we don't mind;) There is a large belly community in south africa who would definately support the concerts and we always have awesome support at our events so I know the BDSS would be sold out! Please consider coming here in the near future!

Who were tribal dancers March 1st?

I attended the BDSS show in San Rafael, CA, last Sat night, March 1st. I was trying to figure out for sure who the four tribal dancers were. I recognized Sharon, Zoe, and I think, Kami, but who was the fourth dancer? Was it Mardi Love? The photos on her website just don't look like the same woman. Whom ever it was, I really enjoyed how she allowed her personality to come through even though tribal is fairly dark and mysterious.

Kudos to BDSS for the 3/10/08 show!

Last night's show in Kirkland, WA was spectacular! It was my first BDSS show and I couldn't have enjoyed it more. From the opening number to the closing piece with those beautiful ostrich feather fans - I was mesmerized throughout.
For me, the highlight was Sharon's solo. The choreography and music were fantastic!
The ballet number was lovely, the Polynesian piece was wonderful....as were all of the others.
Petite Jamilla and Adore amazed me throughout the show with their talent. Is there a more beautiful smile than Adore's? She lit up the stage!
Jillina and Sonia astounded me with their drum solo technique.....I could go on and on talking about everyone's talent, skill and grace. It is obvious that all of the dancers work very hard to put on such a great show.
And of course, near and dear to my heart- the Tribal ladies. I loved every delicious moment of watching them perform. I can't wait to see Zoe again at Spirit of the Tribes next month!
The end of the evening seemed to come too soon, but I will have a lot of wonderful memories and of course DVD's to watch!
Thank you so much for coming to our corner of the world and I'm already looking forward to next year!!

Problems getting on the site?

I can't find the "contact admin" type selection otherwise I would have done that, but I forgot my password on the BDSS site, asked for a new one, but the e-mail never came, I've tried this a few times now, made sure the right e-mail was there, but I still havn't recieved one either in my inbox, junk mail, anywhere...what do I do, short of creating another e-mail account, just to have another account on there? I want to be able to see those member features...

Reserve Seating at Shows? or Not?

I have a group of 16 going to the BDSS show in Spokane. Judging from the ticket numbers, we purchased the first 16 tickets that went on sale. It is my understanding that seats are on a first come first served basis, meaning we have to line up as soon as the doors open and elbow all you other attendees out of our way as we charge down the aisle making fools of ourselves and breaking our necks because we are wearing silly going out shoes just so we can get a good seat up front. Whew! I am exhausted already! My question is: is this standard practice at the shows? When I saw the show last year in Vancouver I remember having an assigned seat. Just wondering if this is a venue policy or a BDSS one? With apologies ahead of time for our elbows. Nebula

New events?!?!

Dear all, the BDSS organization in association with several notable long time members of the US bellydance community is embarking on three new annual weekend sales/workshop/vending/performance events in the USA for next year along the lines of our highly successful Raqs Britannia annual event in the UK. The first of these will be held at the Glendale Civic Auditorium on May 17,18. Titled "LA RAQS!" the event is a joint venture with Marta Shill who, as a member of MECDA made the Cairo Carnival one of the most successful such events in the US. We are honored to be Marta's partner in this event.
The second event is "RAQS AMERICA: Bellydance At the Nation's Capitol" --to be held in Washington DC on the weekend of June 20,21 &22. Working with our friends in the Washington area community together we hope to deliver an annual first class event warranted by the fast growing and dynamic Bellydance community in that region.
The third will be TribaLA, a Tribal and Bellydance fusion festival to be held at the Glendale Civic Auditorium on Sept. 27 and 28 to give wider and more focused coverage to this fast growing branch of interest in Bellydance.
All three of the events will feature vending, all day workshops from top teachers, guest performances from dancers and troupes wishing to demonstrate their talents during the day and a Saturday show with members of the Bellydance Superstars and other top performers both local and from across America. We will price all aspects of our events at the most reasonable we can manage and certainly no more expensive than other such events. We aim to deliver quality and not quantity. The experience must be a good one from all perspectives; the vendors, performers, shoppers, from the casual first time visitors to a bellydance event to the experts who have "seen it all". And we promise to have decent food and refreshments available too!
Over the next few weeks we will be announcing the teachers and performers at each event. We encourage advise and suggestions from you all.

Advertising Suggestion

For the past three years, BDSS has been in the Phoenix area around the same time as the international Scottsdale Arabian Show. I was at the show yesterday and at least one poster for future arab shows featured a dancer in the background. Add in the traditional costumes, artwork, rhinestones, coin hipscarves, and large crowds, and it struck me as a good place to advertise for the BDSS show in Glendale in just a few days. You would reach an wide audience of non-dancers who have an enthusiasm for Middle Eastern culture, a love of glittery costumes, and who are looking for entertainment and places to celebrate. Has BDSS considered ads at the show? The show schedule included many ads, and there were announcement bulletin boards posted around the grounds.

And can you pleas send them a sampler of Arabic pop to play during the costume classes? The closest they got was a bit of "Desert Rose". Generic western pop just didn't quite add to the ambiance...

I couldn't get to the workshops but saw the show last night. There were some lovely
performers in the first part, but for me the 2nd half, of Sharon, Kami and Sam was
just stunning.
All 3 did beautiful solos and the interaction between them was wonderful -
especially loved the subtle comedy aspects on one of the numbers, Sharon and
Kami's duet, and the famous Tsiftetelli.
Kami had such great energy and constant lovely smile, Sharon was mesmerising as
ever, and Sam's technique is incredible including wicked shimmies and an amazing stage
presence.
My (samba batinista but new to tribal) friend was blown away by Sam's fluidity and
Sharon's interpretation of the beat in the drum solo.
Tribal Fusion at its finest.
Thanks to all involved for a lovely evening and please come back soooooon!

What was the song that Zoe did her solo to on the Babeleque tour? I fell in love with it... it was very Indian sounding and as I recall, it was quite short. I attended the Chicago show back in November.

Where's the Music?

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy the version of chaiyya chaiyya that is on Sharon Kihara's tribal fusion bellydance. I know it is by wazulu the ill dravidian. I have look all over on line and can't find it. After buying the dvd and learning the dance it would be nice to use it, but I need that version of chaiyya chaiyya.

Is the superstars web sight going to sell it?

The Rachel Brice art that has been posted in this tribe is from my 11-12 grade high school art class. They have been working on portraiture, and were getting bored. To encourage them to continue on with their practice before they had to do their own self portrait I put out a challenge. They were asked to complete this picture of Rachel. I in turn would upload them to the website, open it up to judging and whomever won would get a $50 prize. So, I would love if you would help in the judging.
Rules
1) Please remember that these are high school kids with fragile egos. Positive comments are great, positive critisism is good, but if you are going to be rude please keep it to yourself.....It's obvious that there are multiple levels of skill here, but I was proud that they all tried.
2) Judging is open until midnight on Sunday night.
3) Please vote twice....
*once for the best piece,
*and Once for the pic that intrigues you. Not all good art is realistic.
I will be sharing these comments as part of a class critique, so if you want to just vote that's fine. If you want to comment, that's cool too.

Belly Bar 2 CDs are both the same

I was at the Show and bought the Belly Bar 2 CD set and both CDs mistakenly have the same songs when they are supposed to be different. A dancer friend of mine also bought it and got the same 2 CDs although they are both printed with different artwork. The Some Like it Cool CD has the same songs as the Some Like it Hot.

Did this happen to anyone else? How can we get the "Some Like it Cool" CD or MP3 downloads? I emailed them but haven't heard back.

Kaihea is a fusion bellydancer and fire performer in the Wash D.C. area who has has been battling ovarian cancer for a couple of years now. With a surgery, a complete hysterectomy and chemo behind her, she was declared cancer free. But, the cancer has shown up again.
