The last 2 performance dvd's i purchased, Tribal Fusions 2 and Tribal La disappointed me because of lack of backstage footage and only one view point (in tribal fusions). They were also very similar.

BDSS' NEXT BIG THING...

As in all aspects of life, BDSS is always changing. New choreographies, costumes, members, workshops, tour dates, merchandise, etc...

PROS and CONS:
*Some members have left/taken time off to work on solo/other projects, but some members have been promoted and new and guest members have been added and showcased in BDSS shows and events.

*With this troubled economy, some events have been canceled/post-poned/reduced, but new dates/shows have been planned and some discounts have been offered at certain events.

*There have been some customer service issues with the BDSS store, but many of their great products have become more accessible through other means of direct/on-line purchasing.

With new things coming like more advanced workshops and the highly anticipated 3DSS DVD, I would like to hear from YOU!!!

What would you like to see as BDSS' next big thing? What new things would you like to see added to shows and events? What changes would you like to see BDSS make for the better?

Raqs America '10

Okay, I'm getting paranoid. Raqs America is the only thing I have to look forward to during the summertime because the BDSS doesn't come around WV that often. So, I go onto the BDSS calendar and what do I find? It goes from from Training Camp in France to Raqs Britannia in late June.....okay? Last year Raqs America was in mid-June....no Raqs America or am I just being paranoid and need to have patience? *sigh* If it's canceled I won't be a happy belly since it seems that MANY dates are being taken off.

BDSS Veils

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, if not, just delete but I wanted to ask about some veils the BDSS used last night. I saw the show in Twin Falls Idaho last night and it was my first time, I was speechless and overcome, it was so incredible. When Sonia came out, I actually teared up a little because I was so happy.
Anyway, during the second half, I think, some of the dancers came out with black veils. The inside of the veils was black but somewhat transparent and they were holding them out behind themselves. Then they came around to the front of the stage and flipped the veils around in front of themselves and it was like a mass of multicolor sparkles, like holding the milky way in your hands type sparkle. They looked like a heavier type of veil also. It was definitely somewhat transparent and looked like some kind of light weave maybe? Anyway, I would just love if someone could direct me to where I might be able to find a veil like those. Thank you in advance.

Who is the new Tribal dancer?

I've been unable to find the name of one of the five Tribal dancers currently with BDSS in Europe, so I wondered if someone could enlighten me with regard to who she is is? I hadn't seen her before this tour so she must be quite new. The one I'm referring to looks quite young and doesn't have any visible tattoos. The other four are Kami, Moria, Samantha and Sabrina.

TRIBAL LONDON 2010 CANCELLATION PRESS RELEASE

We are sorry to announce that due to circumstances beyond our control we are not moving ahead with Tribal London in 2010.

We are researching a venue for 2011 and will also enhance our Tribal set up at Raqs Britannia which is now moving to Sheffield and has been confirmed for the 25th to 27th June 2010.

We are as disappointed as everyone else with the circumstances but we will be trying to arrange some workshops around the same weekend as Tribal London was scheduled and will make details available as soon as we can.

Just a reminder that tickets are still available for our upcoming UK shows in Basingstoke, 22nd October and London 23rd and 24th October.

I´m really pissed off that the BDSS are not coming to Germany....

I looked at the Schedule and there are no Dates.

I don´t understand why they coming to SPain, Paris, London but not to Germany???
Germany has a huge Bellydance Community.....one of the biggest in Europe...so i don´t understand that.
The Last time the BDSS were here is 4 Years ago......i mean of course some of the Dancers coming for a hafla or WS but they don´t coming with the troupe.

I asked several times but Miles said in 2008 when i asked in 2008 he said 2009 but there is still no date for a Show in Germany.

Whats the reason to not coming to Germany?

I think a lot people here are in my opinion and really want to see the FULL TROUPE and SHOW here in Germany

What Are They Doing With My DVD?

Seriously, I know a lot of people have been harping on this, but I've got an update! Yay....NOT! I got a return from my bank and they have already taken out the money for the Tribal LA DVD and I have yet to receive it after an entire month! I e-mailed the peeps over the store on the BDSS website, but still after and entire week of that, no answer either. Are you kidding me!? Now I have to figure out some damn way to get a hold of these people who took my money, but gave me nothing in return. Sure, if it comes in the mail this weekend I'll be happy, but I'm NOT buying from the site again. This sporadic good processing, bad processing is getting under my skin rather quickly. >.<

Jeez, this is ridiculous and it's reminding me of my purchase hassle over the last DVD I got from them. Should have known better. Shame on me!

Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. So I didnt actually order the tribal la dvd yet because i was afraid that what happened with 30 days to vegas would happen again. Well, im glad I didnt order it, because it is happening again! It is very sad that a company that is represented by such high caliber dancers is running so badly (in the merch department). I am torn, Part of me really wants to say screw it Im not supporting bdss anymore because of such bad and total lack of customer service (which is what I do with any company with that treats customers that way), but part of me still wants to support and learn from and watch these wonderful dancers. Piracy anyone?

Wondering what peeps are reading to get motivated, I am re reading the Creative Habit and starting on the Art of Making Dances, with a little bit of Philip Pullman to give myself a break from the info barrage that is dance study.

Also wanted to say bye bye for the next month, I will be traveling Eastern Europe by train for my honey moon...so adding the lonely planet guide to Romania and the European Train timetable to the reading list!

Since the frustration about an order thread was getting a bit long, I thought I 'd post the resolution to my frustration in a new thread and hope others who have received assistance will do the same.

I wrote to Claudia after waiting almost 3 weeks for my DVD and she replied in a timely matter with an apology and explanation for the delay, as well as a shipping date and potential solution in case my DVD doesn't arrive in time. (I'm travelling and planned on taking it with me for my practice)

I placed a $126 order one month ago today, and it hasn't arrived. I've sent three email inquiries (there's no telephone number on the BDSS store website -- how convenient) and I've yet to get a reply. Over the past few years, I've spent a lot of money at BDSS workshops and shows, and I own most of the DVDS. I've flown to workshops and shows all over the country. Never have I been this dissatisfied and frustrated with a business in my life. I'm sorely disappointed in my recent shopping experience, and want my money back. Who do I have to talk to in order to resolve this completely unacceptable issue???

On the close of this full moon my garden is bursting with new life, regeneration of energy, elemental forces manifesting in a mandala outside my cave door and I let go, I release and come full into myself as I am now. I'm stepping into a larger body, mind, soul dance practice and prayer of green photosynthesis, of rich brown microbial web soil life, of myceliating fungal networking of repair and regeneration, of polycultural food forest fractal freedom, water witching winding, permaculture prisms and hope for humans as healers to the Gaia landscape instead of destroyers.

Raqs Britannia - your best bits?

what a great weekend as always at Raqs B - the sun even shined a few times in Blackpool! This is my 3rd year there, and i just love the Souk, every year I spend more & more...the BEST place for costumes, hip scarves & props, all under one roof, love it!

I have to say i was a bit disappointed in the fri night show, i thought the calibre and variety of dancers weren't as good as previous years, and i think it showed in the audience numbers as it seemed very quiet.

I only took 2 workshops this year, as I went with my other half so didn't want to abandon him for too long! but I did a pop choreography with petite Jamila and a drum solo with Ansuya, both fantastic dancers, and teachers.

The Sat night show was my best bit of the weekend, It was nice to see Ansuya back, but i think the star of the show was PJ with her 6 veils - fantastic! i hope she doens't mind me saying, during my workshop with her prior to the show she said she was nervous as she'd only performed it about 3x before, but she made it look effortless, and mesmerising! i also love Issam's interaction with the audience & his love for his drumming really shows through, and well done to the two who auditioned and only had 2-3 days to learn choreography, it was great! and a lovely idea from the BDSS to include some new talent in with their show.

I enjoyed watching the junior BD competition earlier today and thought it was another great idea but some of the dances went on far too long & I lost interest. But such great talent in the UK!

Overall, I always enjoy Raqs B - what did you all enjoy?

Knock 'em dead!
What works on stage, you ask, especially those bigger ones with the fancy lighting, back stages, and sound guys? This class is for those wanting an understanding of what really carries all the way to the back rows. Get ready for big fantastic whip-sharp moves supplied with clear and concise explanations for graceful and flawless execution. Tips and concepts to make you hip work bigger, sharper, and more polished (thus more effective on stage), and how to improve speed while not loosing clarity of movement.

The Art of Making It Weird (Slow, Lovely, and Strange)
We are going to ride the edge between exquisite and strange in this slow movement workshop. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch and do will be focused on, using elements from the head down through to the fingertips. We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horizontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquisite and strange), belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

ABOUT ZOE JAKES…
Zoe is a proud member of The Indigo, which recently was on the road touring their new show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD. Her first DVD, a drum solo choreography, will be coming out this winter. Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to form the band Beats Antique, Zoe has just release their second album with CIA records, Collide. When not with The Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show, a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and Indian classical dance as well as all things vaudeville. Zoe was nominated for Zaghareets best interpretive artist 2007, and The Indigo recently won best troupe 2008. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their existence.

Exchanging damaged Tribal Fusion DVD?

I had ordered my copy of Tribal Fusions the moment it came out, which was before it was revealed that, due to production errors, many of the performances were not insynch with the musical tracks. There was talk when the problem was revealed that those of us with damaged copies would be able to request replacements, but I've never found any details of this. So, how do I get a corrected copy?

Hi, Everyone! RaqsLA will be upon us in a matter of days! Pre-orders have been coming in for about a month now, but it's not too late if you haven't already ordered your performance DVD. Everything you need to know is on my site, www.lisahoglan.com. Advance orders are usually sent out by Tuesday after the show. Those who order at the show usually have theirs sent out by the following weekend, and those who order after the show get theirs last.

Those of you who haven't purchased your performance DVD from last year's RaqsLA can still do so as well, contact me for arrangements. Although I did not personally videotape the downstairs stage, I do have that footage for editing.

Good morning, all!

I tried looking at the credits for the Folies Bergere DVD to determine the artists/songs used in the show but was unable to find anything. I hoping someone here might be able to help...

I'd like to know either the name or artist for the song the Tribal gals use to lead into the Bollywood number. They are wearing veils hooked into their hair. It's very dramatic and (in my opinion) a bit dark.

Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated!

tiny tour update

sharon dvd question

hello everyone, so after months of looking, i still cant find the song that sharon uses on her dvd. well, i found it on myspace, but i cant find a version to buy and use. I really love the dvd and would like to have the song that goes with it, because what good is the choreography if you dont have the music. the other versions of the song just dont match up quite right. i have a few other dvds (not from the superstars) that i have the same problem with also.
so is there anyone out there that can point me in the right direction?

I really love the way ms love dances, but it is very rare that we get a workshop from a tribal superstar here in louisiana, much less one from mardi... i would really love to learn some of her signature moves, so is there any chance of there ever being a mardi dvd for those of us who never get to see her??

a question about the dates listed for the art of belly dance tour... is this it or will there be more dates added? the superstars show at least comes to baton rouge every tour usually...

I d buy it INSTANTLY! And given recent tribal/gothic trends I bet there s a larger and larger market for this (I m not a bit gothic in reality, but very drawn towards it recently).

TRIBAL LONDON

I had a wikid time,
the workshops were so much fun, everyone was up for working so hard, there was a great energy about over the whole weekend.
For our show in the evening, we, (Sharon, Moria, Kami and I) were honored to perform the finale with the incredible Heather Stants and Jules of Urban Tribal. We learned one of Heather's choregraphies and joined them on stage as a special surprise at the end of the show. It was so much fun. Thanks to all who came to the event, and to the London organizers who always work so hard to keep everyone happy and sorted. Here's to next years!

March 1st show in Asheville

Does anyone have an idea who the tribal dancers will be at the show in Asheville? I mean, I'm going regardless, but I'm just curious if I'm going to see any new faces.
